Jella Onderbeke uses the religious iconography and images from early folk art, and doing so she’s, as far as Western culture is concerned, of course rowing against the tide. But she’s playing with it, there’s always more than one layer. These weeping eyes, are they Saint Lucia’s? Or are these the eyes the papers, television and internet are daily serving us? And what about the cellulite adorning the buttocks of an all too desirable Madonna?
