Marin Costiuc works on the topic of the fragmentary and split reality in which we live. His paintings take as starting point images realized by means of collage, thus being closer to a postmodernist attitude towards artistic production. Media images are manipulated in various ways, to produce these initial, digital collages: they are cut, juxtaposed, inverted, reshaped, blurred or inverted. They are always contorted in some way, so that the visual result of these procedures is that the viewer is confronted by a rather confusing blend of visual stimuli, a disconcerting and disquieting mosaic. Thus, in Costiuc’s paintings, the figurative is drained of mimetic value, in a process that enables him to emphasize the sheer sensuousness of painting as such. Devoid of much of their indexical force, the images he paints are unified and compositionally held together by an overall smoothness and unctuousness.
